Moody Bathroom
Upper Hill, Nairobi · 2021
A small en suite in Upper Hill redesigned around a dark, layered material palette. The shower wall is clad in dark brick-format tiles; the floor is black penny-round mosaic. A copper-framed fluted glass screen separates the shower from the vanity zone. The vanity unit is oak with a dark stone countertop and a vessel basin, beneath a tall copper-framed mirror with a botanical mural wallpaper behind it. A wheel-style copper chandelier hangs from the ceiling. Three framed artworks hang on the dark tiled wall opposite the mirror.
The Brief
Redesign a compact en suite in Upper Hill that leans into its low natural light — creating a deliberately dark, atmospheric interior rather than working against it.
Our Approach
Dark brick-format tiles were specified for the shower wall and the main walling, with black penny-round mosaic on the floor. The copper finish was applied consistently — shower screen frame, tap fittings, chandelier and mirror frame — to give cohesion to the space without introducing additional material variation. The botanical mural wallpaper behind the mirror provides the only strong colour in an otherwise near-monochromatic palette of black, dark brown and copper. The chandelier references traditional chandelier forms but at a compact domestic scale appropriate to the room.
