Monumental Gate
Fumba Uptown, Zanzibar, Tanzania · 2024
A competition entry for a monumental gateway at Fumba Uptown, Zanzibar — a mixed-use development with a gated residential community. The structure takes the form of two sweeping concrete legs that rise from ground level, widen as they ascend, and meet at a compressed crown above the carriageway. All images are concept renders.
The Brief
Design a landmark entry gate for Fumba Uptown that reads as a monument from a distance and frames the arrival sequence for residents and visitors entering the development.
Our Approach
The two legs were given a convex profile so the structure reads as a single unified form when viewed head-on, while revealing its split geometry from the side. The off-white concrete finish keeps the gate light against the sky. The base of each leg tapers to a narrow point, keeping the carriageway beneath wide and unobstructed. The landscaped berms flanking the approach road are integrated into the composition, positioning the gate as emerging from the terrain rather than sitting atop it.
