Luxury Dark Kitchen
Kitisuru, Nairobi · 2022
A Muthaiga kitchen where black and gold veined marble covers every horizontal and vertical surface — worktops, splash back and walls — and dark ribbed cabinetry handles the joinery without interrupting the mineral character of the stone. A white apron-front sink with a copper pull-out tap introduces a deliberate contrast against the black stone. The floor is a black and white hexagonal encaustic tile, and the ribbed glass sliding doors to the right open to a timber-shelved wine room. A multi-arm brass globe pendant chandelier provides the ambient light.
The Brief
Design a kitchen in Muthaiga around a bold material statement — black and gold veined marble across all surfaces — with dark ribbed cabinetry, encaustic tile floor, copper fixtures and access to a dedicated wine room.
Our Approach
Using the same black and gold marble on walls, splash back and worktops eliminates the typical visual break between vertical and horizontal surfaces and gives the room its atmosphere. The white apron-front sink is the only deliberate interruption to the dark palette. The copper fixtures read as warm accents rather than a full second material. The ribbed glass pantry doors maintain visual connection to the wine room while giving it a distinct enclosure. The hexagonal encaustic floor tile provides pattern at the foot of a room that is otherwise defined entirely by surface.
