Lounge Home Cinema
Kitisuru, Nairobi · 2023
A private home cinema in Westlands where the ceiling does most of the spatial work. A large elliptical recess lit in deep blue LED gives the room a planetarium quality — the blue reads as sky rather than ceiling. Below it, vertical gold-toned timber fins are built into the charcoal acoustic wall panels and backlit in warm amber, so the room has two distinct light registers: cool blue above, warm gold at eye level. Seating is in large round black velvet ottoman pods in the front of the room, with a stepped level of smaller velvet lounge sofas behind.
The Brief
Design a private home cinema in Westlands with a distinctive character — not a standard dark-box cinema but a room that makes watching a film feel like a contained, theatrical experience from the moment you enter.
Our Approach
The elliptical blue dome ceiling was the primary spatial decision. Rather than a flat ceiling, the recess creates a sense of enclosure overhead without descending — the ceiling reads as height rather than mass. The gold timber fins break up the acoustic wall surface with vertical rhythm and provide a warm counterpoint to the cool blue above. The lounge seating format — round ottomans and floor-level sofas rather than standard chairs — reinforces the social, informal register the client wanted.
