A concept cinema complex for SBD Developers in Mombasa designed across multiple auditorium formats and a full supporting hospitality programme. The premium screening rooms feature grey velvet recliner sofa pods with curved acoustic wall arches and individual seat lighting. A second intimate format uses tan leather lounge sofas facing the screen, with sculptural illuminated acoustic panels on the back wall. The complex also includes a conventional large-format auditorium, a Cinema Club bar beneath a glazed ceiling grid, green velvet lounge and waiting areas, a dedicated corridor with bronze cladding and custom LED ceiling sculpture, and a washroom suite with freestanding backlit oval mirrors.

The Brief

Design a multi-format cinema complex in Mombasa for SBD Developers that provides multiple auditorium experiences — from recliner sofa screening rooms to a conventional large-format hall — alongside a full hospitality programme: bar, lounge, corridor experience and washroom suite.

Our Approach

Three auditorium formats are differentiated by both spatial character and seating type. The premium rooms use individual sofa pods with arched acoustic walls that make each seat feel enclosed and private. The intimate format lines the walls with sculptural illuminated acoustic panels, giving the screening experience a gallery quality. The large conventional hall uses standard upright seating with LED strip lighting on the wall panels for atmosphere. The Cinema Club bar is positioned under a full-height glazed ceiling grid, using daylight as the defining feature of the pre-show and interval experience. Corridor treatment — bronze walls, perforated ceilings, freeform LED ceiling sculpture — ensures the journey between spaces is as considered as the spaces themselves.
